'Get Rid of Spam' Spam

As annoying as it is (cue the Monty Python: "I don't like Spam!"), sometimes I actually enjoy wading through the subject lines in the weird world of unsolicited E-mail (spam). Truly, some of the unique combinations of stuff you get in the subject lines of Spam are truly entertaining.

You've all seen those obnoxious and disgusting e-mails. Suffice is to say its amusing when non-English speakers try to send spam. So much gets lost (or added as the case may be) in translation. Some of which do not even make sense. Since I try to keep this blog as clean as possible, I'm forced to leave out some of the truly funny subject lines involving...uh...well never mind.

Its interesting what spammers will do, however, in attaching XXX to spam subject lines. Subject: XXX House Mortgages
(I am afraid to ask how that works.)
Subject: Own your own online XXX Viagra business
(Why?...so I can end up like you spammers annoying people?)

I also enjoy the random spam that is so obviously false...
Subject: Turn Excess Body Fat in Buliva Watches
Or the ones that are misspelled...
Subject: Avoid Gaining Wight
(Wight...hmmm...must be like a widget. Or perhaps its only avoiding the Australian variety of weight)

I especially like the one that has a deceptive subject that turns out to be an advertisement for an investment...
Subject: Hello...from a high school friend
(Hmmm...You want me to invest my hard earned money in an institution that tricked me into opening an e-mail. Why is this not a good idea??)

I thought I had seen every variety and combination of spam, until this morning, when I got this little gem:
Subject: Get Rid of Spam Forever!
(Okay...Let me think about this. So this is spam offering a product for getting rid of spam. It's "Get Rid of Spam" Spam.)

That, my friends, is what I call mastery of the economic concept of supply and demand. I can't wait for the upgrade: "Get Rid of the 'Get Rid of Spam' " Spam. And all for a price of three easy payments of 19.95 and my self respect. The Gift for the Geek that has everything! What a bargain!

Thoughts on the 'Connecticut 6'

For some weeks, I have had several friends (mostly non-Episcopalians surprisingly) wanting me to voice an opinion on this Connecticut 6 (sounds like a fleabag motel) business. The History of the Football helmet

NCAA.com put out an interesting editorial about the evolution of the football helmet that can be found here . This is in part due in my estimation to the current buzz (one might go so far as to describe it as hysteria) about concussions in contact sports, particularly football. I have always found this an interesting evolution. Long gone are the days of strapping on your leather helmet: In the 50's and 60's, the helmet evolved into, basically becoming a metal then hard plastic version of the leather helmet with the addition of a rudimentary face mask (which was really just a bar at first): Gradually, the helmet's face mask itself began to evolve: Combines with new space age style lightweight plastics and foams, the helmet mask ultimately became a type of full, goalie style face mask (This little number costs just under $1000 to purchase new): Ironically, being a military history major, the football helmet evolution followed the pattern of design that helmets worn

Homily Notes for the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

                Many churches often have Stewardship Renewal drives around this time of year, with St. Michael’s beginning its drive in mid-October. Talks or homilies on stewardship during this time of year often utilize the imagery of the fall harvest season because stewardship is often a time to take stock of God’s bounty-both spiritually and materially-and plan accordingly as to how much a family or individual is willing to commit to giving to the parish in the coming year of their time, talent, and treasure. The Mass readings today are picked in part to reinforce that theme of the importance of giving to God’s work through the church out of the bounty God has given to us. The question in the back of some people’s minds as they listen to stewardship appeals often is not touched upon in depth by the preacher or speaker discussing the importance of stewardship, however.
