Burning Incense to the Emperor

I have talked about this from time to time in the past, but by political views of the State have changed quite a bit in the last ten years. I used to have a rather, dare I say, Machiavellian view of the State particularly in terms of foreign policy. I read way too much Henry Kissinger in college. Suffice is to say, I used to be a flag waving, red, white, and blue kind of guy where Caesar could do no wrong. I do not know if this was being a child of the Reagan '80's at the end of the Cold War where there were clearly good guys and bad guys. or what exactly. As I have continued my readings of politics and theology, particular the early Church Fathers and seen the rise of hostile secularism in the West, particularly the current wave the Same Sex Marriage madness that is hitting the courts, I have re-evaluated my political stances. Perhaps my concern of the Same Sex Marriage thing is the very shrill but persistent cry of "Down with Democracy and Self Governance!" and in...

Letter of Saint Francis to the Rulers of the Peoples

To all mayors and consuls, magistrates and rulers throughout the world, and to everyone who may receive these letters: Brother Francis, your little and despicable servant in the Lord God, sends his wishes of health and peace to all of you. Pause and reflect, for the day of death is approaching. 1 beg you, therefore, with all possible respect, not to forget the Lord or turn away from His commandments by reason of the cares and preoccupations of this world, for all those who are oblivious of Him and turn away from His commands are cursed and will be totally forgotten by Him. And when the day of death does come, everything which they think they have will be taken from them. And the wiser and more powerful they may have been in this world, so much greater will be the punishments they will endure in hell. Therefore, I firmly advise you, my lords, to put aside all care and preoccupation and receive with joy the most holy Body and the most holy Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in holy remem...

Are you an honest debater?

Great article here (actually targeting Atheists, but it applies to anyone). The comments are priceless.

Snap.

Bringing the hammer down . He doesn't come out and say, "Thou, Heretic," but the inference is there.

He has a point...

This article , as much as I hate to admit it, has a point. Boxing has done everything in its power to destroy itself, particularly with the Pay Per View fixation of all good fights. I'm a fan, and I would not even shell out $40+ for a premiere fight. I pay about a hundred for the whole Major League Baseball season on MLB.TV, but that is like literally all the games of all the teams for the whole season (minus the primetime in market games on the major networks). Now, let me be clear. I abhor the whole MMA/UFC thing. It does not teach sportsmanship in any way. It is modified Mad Max "Two Men Enter, One Man Leave" garbage. But, as the article says, they do know how to market. Boxing, on the other hand, has completely missed an entire generation of potential fans by going exclusively to the PPV with the exception of the occasion ESPN boxing night with nobody boxers. I mean, it's like if the only real baseball that ever airs on TV is Class A minor league baseball. Yes, ...

He don't get no respect!

I admit, I love boxing. Probably not as much as baseball due to a lot of the corruption in the Don King era, but I have always enjoyed it. I especially always liked watching Wladimir (and his now-retired brother Vitali) Klitschko box. A lot of people think he's boring. No flash, no trash talking. None of this flashy float-like-a-butterfly-sting-like-a-bee garbage that boxing morphed into since Muhammad Ali.  He's just an old fashioned 1950's style bruiser. Hey, go with the classics.
