Old Chestnut Reviews: Button Shy Games Last Lighthouse

Image
I have done one review before of a Button Shy Games classic called Skulls of Sedlec . I was dubious at first of Button Shy "wallet" games, namely because the ones I had attempted were Print 'n Play games that I had tried to print myself. Not having either the advanced home printer or the patience for the fiddly nature of printing game cards at home, my experience with small wallet sized PnP games was pretty bad. But, I rolled the dice and tried Skulls of Sedlec directly from the Button Shy website. I had such a good experience, I decided to try another one (or two...)   I ordered a few more different Button Shy games, but I remained skeptical that they could do so many different games with only about 18 cards in a wallet and keep variety. So far from the ones I have tried, that has not been the case. So, I will likely do more Button Shy reviews in the future.  Today, I will discuss a little gem I almost did not order until the last minute. I was ordering some other bigge...

Old Chestnut Reviews: Skulls of Sedlec (& Expansions)

I know the title of this game sounds ghastly, and I suppose the theme of this little pocket game from Button Shy Games is a bit on the macabre side. In my defense, it's more macabre in the Day of the Dead kind of way. The official description of the game is this: "Sedlec Ossuary, 16th Century AD. The Black Plague and Hussite Wars have overcrowded the graveyard. Help the Bone Collector, a half-blind monk, by exhuming graves and arranging the skulls inside the crypt. You are novice monks, competing to create the best arrangement of skulls. Dig up graves from the graveyard to reveal cards, take cards into your hand to collect skulls, and arrange the cards from your hand into a stack. Whoever better honors the deceased’s last wishes will score more points. The Bone Collector will then declare one player's stack as the most exceptional." For those who have never heard of this gaming company, Button Shy Games specializes in these clever little pocket games. By po...

Old Chestnut Game Reviews

Board gaming has really come a long way since the days of the moldy oldies like Monopoly and Clue. I have written about this before here and here ; so, there is no need to rehash that story. What surprised me was those two posts got more views than any posts I had written on this blog in a long time. While I really don't care one dot or tiddle about getting hits, going viral, or becoming the next big social media influencer, it did surprise me. What had initially been a one-off blog post flight of fancy that I did not think anyone would care about given the nature of my blog content turned into something that apparently some people who occasionally come to this blog are interested in.   As such, I have been pondering getting into some sort of social media commentary on board gaming. There are tons of well know board game Youtubers out there like Alex from BoardGameCo , Dice Tower , Sir Thecos , and tons of other ones that are great content. I would certainly have no idea wher...
