The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Movie

I finally went to see the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. For some weird reason, I always put off seeing the movies that really interest me. I am not exactly certain why I have this odd habit, other that perhaps I am afraid of being disappointed.

In any event, I liked the new movie version for the most part. My major concern going in was that the Christ allegory was going to be watered down or else the plot was going to be butchered. There was a little plot and dialogue finagling, but on the whole, I thought it did not stray from the book too far.

I did a radio version of this play when I was in college, and I guess my producer tendencies are showing. I was not really fond of the casting. The 4 child were well done, for the most part. I did think Peter and Susan were a bit too old, but other than that, they did well. I thought the guy that played Mr. Tumnus was, frankly, a clown. And I didn't think the wolves sounded like wolves. And I thought the White Witch was just not that scary, and her performance was somewhat wooden. I did enjoy the Beavers' banter although a lot of it was not from the book.

I still think that the BBC mini-series of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe that came out in the late '80s was much better.

Really? I've never liked those Brit versions. But then I've never been that much of a fan of British tv--it's just too dry and drab for my liking.

Thoughts on the 'Connecticut 6'

For some weeks, I have had several friends (mostly non-Episcopalians surprisingly) wanting me to voice an opinion on this Connecticut 6 (sounds like a fleabag motel) business. The History of the Football helmet

NCAA.com put out an interesting editorial about the evolution of the football helmet that can be found here . This is in part due in my estimation to the current buzz (one might go so far as to describe it as hysteria) about concussions in contact sports, particularly football. I have always found this an interesting evolution. Homily Notes for the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

                Many churches often have Stewardship Renewal drives around this time of year, with St. Michael’s beginning its drive in mid-October. Talks or homilies on stewardship during this time of year often utilize the imagery of the fall harvest season because stewardship is often a time to take stock of God’s bounty-both spiritually and materially-and plan accordingly as to how much a family or individual is willing to commit to giving to the parish in the coming year of their time, talent, and treasure. The Mass readings today are picked in part to reinforce that theme of the importance of giving to God’s work through the church out of the bounty God has given to us. The question in the back of some people’s minds as they listen to stewardship appeals often is not touched upon in depth by the preacher or speaker discussing the importance of stewardship, however.
