The story is total BS, invented (or at least passed on) by the realtor to generate buzz. The owner was Ludlow Griscom, a member of the Theosophical Society, not the NY Theological Society. He was a famous bird-watcher and built the house for birdwatching. Look on the mansion's webpage (http://chapelhillmansion.com, which confusingly and mistakenly calls the society the "Theosocial" Society instead of the Theosophical Society).
