Reflection for Michaelmas

  In lieu of the normal readings for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, this parish has the Mass readings from the Feast Day of Saint Michael and the Archangels. Saint Michael, the patron saint of this parish, is revered not only as a protector, but also as a warrior of God, embodying the triumph of good over evil, and the assurance of divine assistance in the spiritual battle that every believer faces.

  In Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14, we encounter a vision of the heavenly court, where the Ancient of Days presides in majesty and authority. The imagery of thrones set in place and the books being opened signifies the ultimate judgment and the establishment of God’s kingdom. Michael is often associated with this scene as the protector of God’s people, standing firm in the face of opposition. His role as a defender against the forces of evil is crucial, as he is depicted as a leader among the heavenly hosts, fighting for justice and righteousness. This vision emphasizes the reality of spiritual warfare, and the assurance that God has appointed powerful beings like  Michael to guard and protect His faithful. The significance of Michael as a Patron Saint lies in his unwavering commitment to uphold truth and justice, reminding believers of their own call to stand firm in faith amidst trials.    

  In Revelation 12:7-12, we witness a dramatic portrayal of the cosmic battle between Michael and his    angels against the dragon, identified as Satan. This passage highlights the victory of Michael and his heavenly army over the forces of darkness, illustrating the  ultimate triumph of good over evil. The imagery of war in heaven serves as a powerful reminder of the constant spiritual struggle that exists, not only in the heavenly realm, but also in the lives of believers. Michael’s victory brings encouragement and hope, assuring us that, despite the challenges we face, God’s power prevails. As a Patron Saint, Michael embodies the strength and courage needed to   confront evil, inspiring believers to rely on divine assistance in their own struggles against temptation and sin. His intercession serves as a reminder that we are not alone in our battles; we have a powerful advocate in heaven. 

  In John 1:47-51, we find Jesus speaking of Nathanael as an "Israelite indeed," in whom there is no deceit. Jesus’ reference to the angels ascending and descending upon the Son of Man evokes the imagery of Jacob’s ladder, suggesting a connection between heaven and earth. While this passage does not directly mention Michael, it underscores the importance of divine messengers and the connection between the earthly and the heavenly. Michael, as an archangel, represents this connection, serving as a bridge between God and humanity. His role as a Patron Saint is to guide and protect believers as they navigate their spiritual journeys, reminding them of the   constant presence of God’s grace and the support of heavenly beings. 

  The importance of Saint Michael as a Patron Saint is deeply rooted in the themes of protection, justice, and divine assistance found in the readings from Daniel, Revelation, and John. Michael’s role as a defender against evil and a champion of God’s people resonates with the spiritual struggles faced by believers today. His intercession and example encourage us to remain steadfast in our faith, to seek justice, and to engage in the spiritual battles that define our Christian journey. As we honor Saint Michael, we are reminded of the power of God’s grace, the victory of Christ over sin and death, and the assurance that we have a mighty protector in our archangel, guiding us toward the ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom.
