Crossing over the Whirlwind


   The image of crossing over to the other side is a powerful and symbolic concept that is reflected in today’s readings from the Bible. These passages from this coming Sunday (12th Sunday of Ordinary Time) invite us to reflect on the journey of faith, the challenges we face along the way, and the transformative power of encountering God in the midst of the storms of life.
    In the Book of Job (38:1, 8-11), we witness God's response to Job's questioning and suffering. God speaks to Job out of the storm, reminding him of His power and sovereignty over creation. The imagery of the sea and the boundaries set for it highlight God's control over the forces of nature. This passage reminds us that God is the one who guides us as we cross over to the other side, navigating the uncertainties and challenges of life. It calls us to trust in His wisdom and providence, even when we cannot see the way forward.
    In his Second Letter to the Corinthians (5:14-17), the apostle Paul speaks about the new creation that comes through Christ. He emphasizes that in Christ, we are made new, and the old has passed away. This passage speaks to the transformative power of crossing over to the other side through faith in Christ. It reminds us that our journey of faith is one of continual growth and renewal, as we are transformed by the love and grace of God. It challenges us to leave behind our old ways and embrace the new life that Christ offers us.
    Lastly, in Mark 4:35-41, we encounter the story of Jesus calming the storm. As Jesus and His disciples cross over to the other side of the sea, they encounter a fierce storm that threatens to overwhelm them. In the midst of the chaos, Jesus speaks a word of peace, calming the wind and the waves. This passage reminds us that Jesus is with us in the storms of life, guiding us as we cross over to the other side. It challenges us to have faith and trust in His power to bring peace and calm to the turbulent waters we face.
    Reflecting on these readings, we are reminded that the journey of faith is not always smooth sailing. We will encounter storms, challenges, and uncertainties along the way. However, we can take comfort in the fact that God is with us, guiding us and calming the storms that threaten to overwhelm us. Crossing over to the other side is a journey of faith, trust, and transformation. It is a journey that leads us to new beginnings, new life, and a deeper relationship with God.
    As we navigate the storms of life and cross over to the other side, may we be reminded of God's power and presence with us. May we trust in His guidance, embrace the new life He offers us, and find peace in the midst of the chaos. May our faith be strengthened, our hearts renewed, and our spirits uplifted as we journey with God to the other side.

Thoughts on the 'Connecticut 6'

For some weeks, I have had several friends (mostly non-Episcopalians surprisingly) wanting me to voice an opinion on this Connecticut 6 (sounds like a fleabag motel) business.      Last week, I posted a bit on my hobby of board gaming. I was not sure if anyone would read that post, as it is not my usual faire on this blog. For whatever reason, that post got way more views than anything I have posted in a while. For what it's worth, I will continue my little series of monographs on board gaming, as there appears to be some interest.      My assumption for these first few board game blog posts is to start with the basics that I wish I had known when I started getting into board gaming. My board gaming journey, pt. I

     Something a bit different today than my normal reflections. I thought I would delve a little bit more into a topic that is not necessarily theological in nature. I am a real person, and not some ethereal doctor in an ivory tower who gets to smoke a pipe and contemplate the infinite mysteries all day. So, today, I thought I would delve into one of my personal hobbies: board gaming.      Now, do not tune me out because you hear "board gaming" and immediately default in your brain to your brother overturning a table with Monopoly money flying everywhere because the game has gone on for hours and overturning the table was the only option left other than murder.
